Long-Term Disability Insurance

The chances of a debilitating long term disability far outweigh the chance of death to a member. The APMA Long Term Disability Plan offers monthly benefits up to $7,500 for total disability due to a covered sickness or injury. Benefits are paid following your selected waiting period of 90 or 180 days and are payable up to age 65 (or for one year if disability occurs between age 65 and 69).

Questions & Answers

How much coverage is available for me?
Any member, under age 60 and working on a full-time basis (at least 20 hours a week in your profession) may apply for this coverage.

May I select a monthly benefit?
You may select a monthly benefit from $100 to $7,500 in $100 increments, as long as the benefit you select is not more than 60% of your basic monthly income.

May I select a waiting period?
You may select a waiting period of 90 or 180 days; whichever best meets your needs.

When will my coverage take effect?
Your coverage goes into effect the first day of the month following the day your application for coverage was approved provided you are actively at work on the effective date and your premium is paid within 30 days of the effective date of coverage.

How long will the plan pay benefits?
If you are under age 60 when you become totally disabled, you can receive benefits until you turn 65, the total disability ends, as long as the required proof of disability is given. And if a disability begins on or after age 60, but prior to age 69, you can still collect up to two years of benefit payments or to age 70.

What kind of disabilities will the plan cover?
The plan pays for total disability caused by a covered injury or sickness for which you are receiving regular care of a physician other than yourself. Total disability means that you are unable to perform substantial and material duties of your regular occupation during the waiting period and the first five years of the disability. After five years, total disability means that you are unable to perform the material duties of any gainful job for which you are reasonably fit by training, education or experience.

Can my coverage be cancelled?
No. Your plan can only be cancelled if you are no longer a member of APMA, you cease to pay your premiums when due, you retire, or cease to be engaged in duties of your occupation, reach age 70 or the Master Policy is no longer in force.

How will my APMA benefits coordinate with other disability benefits I might receive?
This plan does coordinate with other disability coverage so that your total combined benefits do not exceed 70% of your basic monthly pay.

Limitations & Exclusions

This plan does not cover disabilities due to: pregnancy, or any termination of pregnancy (except complications of pregnancy), war or act of war, intentionally self-inflicted injuries, participation in an illegal occupation or attempt to commit a felony, suicide, and any condition that is waived by a rider to your certificate. No benefits are payable while in a penal or correctional institution and benefits are not payable during the waiting period.

Pre-existing Conditions

Pre-existing conditions mean any injury or sickness for which the person incurred charges, received medical treatment, consulted a physician, or took prescribed drugs within 12 months before becoming insured. If total disability is due to a pre-existing condition and it begins within 24 months of the date the person becomes insured, no benefits will be paid unless the person has not incurred charges, received medical treatment, consulted a physician, or taken prescribed drugs for such condition, or any complication of it, for 12 continuous months while insured.
